Shimla, concerned parents of private school students in Shimla gathered at the Chief Minister’s Office to voice their concerns over the recent hike in HRTC bus pass fares.
Previously, the monthly bus pass rate was ₹1800 for distances up to 5 km, and ₹2400 for distances beyond 5 km. However, over the past few days, parents reported a significant and sudden increase in these fares, causing distress among families dependent on public transport for school commuting.
Deputy Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Mukesh Agnihotri, acknowledged the issue and engaged in detailed discussions about the broader transport challenges faced in Shimla. Responding to the outcry, he announced a new, structured fare system specifically for students of private schools in the region.

Responding to the outcry, he announced a new, structured fare system specifically for students of private schools in the region.
According to the Deputy CM, a three-tier slab system will be introduced in the coming days:
Slab 1: For distances between 0 to 6 km, the monthly bus pass will now cost ₹1200 — a reduction from the previous ₹1800 rate for the 0 to 5 km range.
Slab 2: For distances ranging from 6 to 12 km, the new fare will be ₹1800, reduced from the earlier ₹2400.
Slab 3: For distances beyond 12 km, the fare will now be ₹2000 per month.
These new fare reductions are aimed at easing the financial burden on parents while ensuring that students continue to have reliable access to public transport.
Currently, students can apply for bus passes only through offline methods. However, Shri Agnihotri also revealed plans to integrate artificial intelligence into the bus pass application portal, enabling online services in the near future. This move is expected to streamline the process, allowing parents and students to apply from home without visiting transport offices or schools.
The announcement was met with appreciation and relief. Parents expressed their gratitude to Deputy CM Mukesh Agnihotri, praising his quick response and commitment to public welfare.
