First Hydrogen Buses Hit the Roads in Ladakh, India Makes History 2025
Leh, Ladakh – In a major step towards sustainable transportation, India has made history by launching its first-ever hydrogen-powered buses in the Leh district. This initiative, led by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), marks a significant shift in the country’s commitment to renewable energy and eco-friendly mobility.
India's First Hydrogen Bus
As the world looks to the future of transportation, hydrogen is widely expected to replace traditional fuels such as diesel, petrol, and CNG. The introduction of hydrogen buses positions India at the forefront of this transition, demonstrating its resolve to adopt cleaner, greener alternatives. The first hydrogen bus service in India will operate from a dedicated mobility station located in Palam, Leh. This groundbreaking project is not only a first for the country but is also unique globally, operating at an altitude of 11,600 feet above sea level—making it the world’s highest hydrogen bus service.
The trial launch was preceded by rigorous inspections and research, led by Bhupesh Chaudhary, the Administrative Secretary of the Transport Department in Leh and Ladakh. His evaluation of the hydrogen plant played a crucial role in ensuring the project's readiness and safety.
This initiative is expected to have a significant environmental impact. It aims to eliminate approximately 350 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually and generate 230 metric tonnes of pure oxygen—an environmental contribution equivalent to planting 15,000 trees.
India's hydrogen bus project not only enhances eco-friendly public transport but also sets a global benchmark in renewable energy adoption. With zero net carbon emissions and a commitment to cleaner air, the country takes a bold stride toward a sustainable future.
